Benjamin Shaver was born September 9, 1777[need citation] in Pennsylvania. We do not know his parents yet.

Benjamin married Mary Louder (1778-1864) (Loder, Lowder) January 11, 1802 in Cumberland County, New Jersey.[1] The family moved into (then) Cayuga County, New York about 1809.[2] It appears they lived along the border between North Lansing and Groton since they appear in the census for each town over the years. It is more likely that they lived on the border and different census enumerators visited them from each town rather than the family moving back and forth.

In 1825 Benjamin had one son, and 7 daughters on 2 acres according to the New York State census collected that year. He had 4 cattle, 1 horse, 13 sheep, and 5 hogs. The number of acres recorded is suspiciously low (perhaps it should read 20 acres). The state measured wealth using several methods and one of them was the amount of clothe spun or manufactured within a home. In this case, the Shavers produced about 40 yards of flannel or woolen clothe plus another 40 yards of linen, cotton or other "thin" clothe.

The 1835 New York State census found 3 males and 5 females in the house. One male had been born in the previous year, probably a grandson to a married daughter living at home. That would also account for a new male in the house. There was now 1 unmarried daughter between 16 and 45. The family had 2 improved acres occupied by the family. Benjamin had 3 cattle, 1 horse, 1 sheet (or maybe 11), and 6 hogs. There were 30 yards of flannel or woolen clothe and 50 yards of linen, cotton or other "thin" clothe manufactured in the household.

Benjamin died October 4, 1852[3] in Lansing, Tompkins County, New York. He would have been 75 years, 25 days. Benjamin is buried in the Miller Cemetery. The location of this cemetery also suggests the family lived along the border between the towns of Lansing and Groton as noted above.
