Daly (surname)

Daly is derived from Ó Dálaigh, a patronymic that, itself, is derived from an occupation. That is, the original name referred to a person that was present at meetings. The implication is that the original person or persons that took the name Dalach performed some duty at important meetings of chiefs and kings. Later generations changed the name and added the Ó to indicate the name originated with an ancestor. So this name is both a patronymic and occupation.

The Daly spelling of this name is one of the 10 most common names in Ireland today.
