English Civil War

The English Civil War was a series of armed conflicts and a time of political instability (to some extent) between 1642 and 1651. The conflict pitted Royalists against Parliamentarians for control of England and her colonies. The Parliamentarians won control of the English government, which operated as a commonwealth until 1653 and then as a protectorate under the personal rule of Oliver Cromwell. Note that, as with most conflicts, the actual issues and actions are far more complex than summarized on this page.
