This incomplete list of famines shows when and approximately where our ancestors were challenged by food shortages caused by war, epidemics, shifts in weather, and other conditions over which they had little or no control. The frightening part of this list is that there are so many.

1845-1850 Ireland The Great Irish Famine resulted in death and emigration to North America, Australia, and any place that would take them. The population of Ireland was reduced by 20% to 25%.

1846-1857 Scottish highlands The Highland Potato Famine coincided with the Great Irish Famine, resulting in over 1.7 million Scots to leave.
