Henry Clay Spencer was born August 4, 1844 in Pawling, Dutchess County, New York to Lyman Spencer (1803-1898) and Esther Brownell (1805-1885).
Family tradition says that Henry worked in a cannon factory during the American Civil War.
Henry moved to Burlington, Bradford County, Pennsylvania after 1865 with his parents.
Henry married Amanda J. Dunn (1850-1925) on June 23, 1867 at the bride's home in the Fairview area of Burlington.
