John O. Huff (1837-1887)
From My Research Wiki
John O. Huff was born November 22, 1837 to William C. Huff (1818-1898) and Catharine Losey (1818-1882) in Walpack Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. The family lived on the road between Flatbrookville and Stillwater, which is no longer open between the two communities. Flatbrookville, in fact, is little more than a few houses these days.

American Civil War
John enlisted with the Ninth New Jersey Infantry Regiment, also called the "9th New Jersey Volunteers" on September 20, 1861 (23 years, 9 months) at Trenton, New Jersey.[1] It is not clear if he traveled to Trenton to enlist or was able to enlist near home and travel to Trenton for first muster (probably the latter). The 9th was raised as a regiment of sharpshooters and, eventually, were issued the Springfield 1861 rifled musket. By this point in the war, everyone understood it was going to be a long fight so the men enlisted for 3 years.
John was 5 foot 10-1/2 inches with a light complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair. This is the picture of a young man of Germanic/Dutch/Northern European descent.
The 9th was part of the Burnside Expedition to North Carolina where the regiment spent the next several years. The regiment returned to Trenton in January 1864 when the enlistment time was up.
John re-enlisted with the 9th on January 17, 1864[2] along with more than 50% of the veterans, allowing them to add the word "Veteran" to the regiment name. Men took great pride in serving with a 'veteran' regiment. The regiment moved into Virginia for 1864 to fight at Cold Harbor, Drewry's Bluff, and Petersburg.
John was wounded during the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864. He was taken to the field hospital where his right thumb was amputated. John moved through a series of hospitals until he reached the General Army Hospital in Trenton. He received leave and went home to marry Mary Ann Crawn (1843-1920) on December 24, 1864. John was discharged from the army on February 11, 1865.[3]
John's service, medical, and pension records provide a glimpse into his life during the war. The New Jersey State Archives also include information about John showing his re-enlistment date.[4]
Marriage
John married Mary Ann Crawn (1843-1920) on December 24, 1864 in Sussex County. Mary was his first cousin once removed. That is, John married his aunt's granddaughter.
John and Mary Ann moved to Standing Stone Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania in 1868. Her parents also moved and both families lived in the present-day Keene Summit area (they were also related to the Keene's). John Huff "of Wysox" purchased 48 acres in Standing Stone from Edward & Elizabeth Clark on October 6, 1868 for $1,440.[5]
In 1883, John was receiving $4 per month though the record indicates the wound was to his left hand.[6][7]
John had 46 acres worth about $450 in 1884. He also had two cows and two horses.[8]
In 1886, John still had the 50 acres but it was now assessed at $1,400. 40 acres was cleared land while the rest was timbered. He also had two cows and two horses.[9]
John died February 17, 1887 at home and was buried in the Keene Summit Cemetery. His will was probated on March 7, 1887.[10] He left $10 each to his children Rosie B., Mahlon, and Sarah M. Everything else was left to his wife. George W. Huff (his brother) and Oscar Schoonover witnessed the will.
