John O. Huff (1837-1887) Medical Records

United States Army medical records for Private John O. Huff (1837-1887), Ninth New Jersey Infantry Regiment, Company E. The medical records are copied as-read; handwritten text is shown in italics. Stamped or pre-filled text is bold. The first line shows the notes for filing.

It is interesting to see his transfer and treatment from his regiment to organizations further and further away from people he knew or that knew him. The August 10 report makes the amputation of his right thumb seem mundane ("Slight wound of right upper extremity"). Not quite sure how that doctor saw an amputated right thumb as a "slight wound".

The last record notes a furlough and return in November (5-12) as well as his final discharge but does not note a furlough in December when he married Mary Ann Crawn (1843-1920) in Sussex County... unless she came to him in Newark and the marriage was just recorded in Sussex County.
