The Ninth New Jersey Infantry Regiment, also called the 9th New Jersey Volunteers and later the 9th New Jersey Veteran Volunteers, was a military unit of the American Civil War raised in the fall of 1861. The recruiting broadsides (posters) specifically targeted sharpshooters, men who were very good with a rifled musket. They were also given the nickname the "Jersey Muskrats".

John O. Huff (1837-1887) mustered into Company E as a private on September 20, 1861 at Camp Olden near Trenton.
