Robert Spencer was born November 6, 1674 in either Newport or East Greenwich, Rhode Island to John Spencer (c1638-1684) and Susannah Griffin (c1642-1719).

Robert SPENCER is referred to as "Captain" in most records starting about 1736, probably serving in the colonial militia in some struggles with the Indians. In early East Greenwich records he is listed as a freeman in 1696 and a deputy to the colonial legislature in 1721.

About 1723 he moved to North Kingstown, RI and probably later to Exeter, RI. An inventory of his property taken July 29, 1748 lists him as being worth 1140 pounds, 9 shillings, a considerable fortune in those days. It included wearing apparel (53 pounds), cash and pocket book (12 pound 12s 6d), bonds (337 pounds 10s, 112 pound 10s, etc.), pewter, spice mortar, cheese tub, warming pan, rope making tackling, sow, 3 pigs, 2 shoats, 3 cows, etc.
