From My Research Wiki
Steve Sovich (also known as "Stefanus Sovič"[1], "Stefan Sovič", and "István Sowics"[2]) was born Friday, August 18, 1893[1] [3] in Čirč or Obručné, Slovakia, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at that time. Both Čirč and Obručné are now in the northern part of the Slovak Republic.
His parents were George Sovič (or Georgius Sovič[1]) and Helena Krincka[1] of Obručné. Steve was baptized on August 28, 1893 in Čirč.[1]
Steve arrived at Ellis Island Sunday, June 12, 1912 aboard the ship Kaiserin Auguste Victoria from Hamburg to New York.[2] The ship's manifest lists him as 18 year old István Sowics traveling with Janos Sowics (also 18).[2] The Kaiserin Auguste Victoria became a US troop transport in 1919 then it was given to the Cunard Line as a war prize. Later, Kaiserin Auguste Victoria became the RMS Express of Scotland under the Canadian flag.
Steve traveled from New York City to Clairton, Pennsylvania where he probably had relatives. A family story says someone working at Ellis Island made him buy some oranges and eat them while the man was watching.
On Thursday, August 30, 1917 Steve married Susan Sima (1896-1979) (sometimes spelled "Shema") in Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.<ref="Marriage">Jefferson County Pennsylvania Marriage License Docket. Steve filed his intention to become a US citizen on December 20, 1924 in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.[6] He became a citizen on May 7, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[6]
On April 27, 1942 Steve worked for the Allenport Tube Mill in [[1]], Washington County, Pennsylvania.[7] He was living at 469 Motheral Avenue in Monessen.[7] Steve was 5 foot 4 inches (162.5 cm), 135 pounds (61.2 kg), with blue eyes, brown hair, and a "ruddy" complexion.[7]
